Shoebridges was formed in 1919 and has been run by the same family ever since. Operating across the East Midlands from three sites in Northampton, Wisbech and Peterborough, the company specialises in the sale and repair of electric motors, geared units, and associated products and spares.
Now owned by the third generation, managing director Robert Shoebridge appointed Watersheds to secure a fitting future for the business upon his retirement. Watersheds had previously supported Robert through several acquisitions and disposals.
The sale was led by James Owen, Partner at Watersheds, who shortlisted suitable buyers to ensure the 100-year-old legacy, and the ethos of the company would be retained. The ideal buyer was identified as Boardley & Roberts, a firm with a similar sector specialism but serving East Anglia and looking to grow to compete with national businesses on scale and capability.
James said: “Selling a family-owned business can be a very delicate process, especially where there is legacy and reputation to protect. It was important for us to identify the right buyer who would understand the value of this and secure the ongoing future of the business for both the staff and its high-profile, blue-chip customer base.
“We worked closely with Robert to fully understand what he wanted in a buyer and then ran an extensive, yet highly confidential exercise within this close-knit industry.
“Being asked to sell the family business with three generations of dedication and expertise was a privilege for us. Robert knew from previous experience that we would deliver and be completely aligned with his wishes.
Robert Shoebridge added: “This is the third time I have worked with Watersheds and I would welcome the opportunity to work with them again in the future, should the chance arise. I’m delighted Watersheds has been such an important part of this journey.”
