Buying a business can be a quick mechanism for achieving growth. Success is not about dredging the market to find something to buy. There are many companies for sale. Quality acquisitions are strategic where the result is the sum of the profitability of each of the businesses and then something more in addition. We help our clients to find this added benefit.

Our client Maun Industries makes parallel action pliers and wanted to consider acquisitions. We helped the Company to buy Blastparts Products which is not an obvious fit. It manufactures spare parts for automatic shot blast machine equipment. We recognised, however that these spare parts can be manufactured by Maun’s machines, improving utilisation rates making Maun’s fixed costs work harder.

 

Small deals like this can have a beneficial effect on the purchaser out of all proportion to the size of the transaction. Since 1998 when Watersheds was formed we have been continuously talking to people about buying and selling businesses. This knowledge helps us to identify strategic acquisitions where the synergy might not be obvious at first sight.

On a larger scale our client Planit Holdings PLC, an AIM listed company at the time, had bigger plans. A software company providing CAD/CAM systems, it wanted to consolidate the market in which it operated. We helped Planit to buy first Licom, then Radan and finally Pathtrace. As a result the turnover of the group doubled allowing the removal of duplicated overheads and sharing the benefit of research and development.

A good acquisition is well planned and executed. We help our clients to do this, saving them time. They have a business to run. We structure it to reduce their risk and if necessary raise the finance to complete the transaction.
